According to
Combahee River Collection the genesis of black feminism began with the
oppression of black women during the times of slavery. Black women had a double
whammy against them, not only where they black, but they didn’t have penises.
Liberation? Please! That was the last thing Uncle Tom was handing out to
blacks. We didn’t matter and we were not close to being liberated. However, women
such as Ida B Wells and Mary Church Terrell fought endlessly to educate black
women on their sexual and racial identity and how their political fight was distinctive.
Current Black feminism is the end result of numerous women who have gave up
their personal lives and other sacrifices for the betterment of black women.
The notion of experience in feminist theory has been a powerful and empowering one for many feminist women. This blog is dedicated to the women who have paved the way for young aspiring feminist like myself. Black Feminist Thought, a class instructed by Dr. Melissa Pearson initiated this journey of mine...take a look.
