The title shocked you, just as much as it did me. And to think....to think about where the black community has come from. OUR ANCESTORS would be ashamed. As I watched this video from Tommy Sotomayor, the YouTube chauvinist as I call him, I sat in disgust. Tommy starts off his blog as if he doing black women a favor by educating us. The tile of his video blog Have Feminist Abandoned Black Women discusses the absences of feminist in America aiding the black woman in crisis. He focuses his points around the battery incident of a young black woman hit by a black male bus driver. Tommy argues that white female feminist has not come to support the young teen who was attacked and black feminist have been forgotten and abandoned. Sotomayor directs his attention on the whereabouts of white feminist, however in his entire video he did not once mention Melissa Harris Perry or Audre Lorde. Tommy is clearly ignorant to what the black feminist movement really entails. He claims that the "black women are funded for destroying the community" and we have turned against the black male. I think Mr. Tommy has forgotten the role that black women have been playing for centuries... superwoman. His continuous insults and ignorant thoughts to and about black women only infuriated me more. I wonder how many more Tommy Sotomayaors are out there?
The notion of experience in feminist theory has been a powerful and empowering one for many feminist women. This blog is dedicated to the women who have paved the way for young aspiring feminist like myself. Black Feminist Thought, a class instructed by Dr. Melissa Pearson initiated this journey of mine...take a look.
